Northeast Florida gets around sixty-eight thunderstorm days a year. That is the number worth holding onto, because it is not a single dramatic event, it is a recurring electrical load on every branch circuit in the house, every summer, for as long as the house stands.
A built-in refrigerator is uniquely exposed to it. It is permanently connected, it is not on a switch anyone uses, and in most kitchens it cannot be unplugged without pulling a heavy cabinet out of a fitted opening. It sits on that circuit through everything.
The delay is the diagnostic problem
Electrical damage to a control board is frequently partial rather than total. A transient degrades a component without destroying it. The board carries on running the compressor, reading the sensors and driving the display, and nothing looks wrong.
The failure appears when a marginal circuit is asked to do a specific job. A defrost cycle that does not terminate. An evaporator sensor that reads open intermittently. One sealed system that starts and one that does not. By then the storm is a month in the past and nobody mentions it, which is why we ask.
Tell us about an outage or a strike when you book. It is not small talk. It changes what we suspect first, and on a cabinet with two independent sealed systems it can cut the diagnosis in half.
Extended outages are a different mechanism
Parts of this metro went days without power after Matthew in 2016, after Irma in 2017 and after Helene in 2024. Multi-day outages do something a brief flicker does not.
When power returns, a full-size cabinet restarts into two warm compartments and runs both sealed systems at full duty for hours to pull them back to setpoint. That is the heaviest load these units ever see, and it is delivered on a hot day, with a condenser that is as clean or as dirty as it was the week before.
What fails under that load is not usually the compressor itself. It is the components around it: start and run components, condenser fan motors already near the end of their service life, and boards that were marginal beforehand. If a cabinet is going to fail because of an outage, it usually fails in the fortnight after it, not during.
There is a practical consequence. If your condenser is due a cleaning and a storm is forecast, do it before rather than after. The restart is when the coil has to work hardest.
What we check, and what we will not sell you
On a suspected control fault we read the compartment temperatures first, then the codes stored on the display, then the condenser and the fan, then the sensors, and only then the board. Boards are the most expensive part on most of these cabinets and the easiest to blame, and a fair number of cabinets sent to us as board failures are a failed sensor, a seized condenser fan or a defrost heater.
We do not publish control-board part numbers as definitive. Board fit on these cabinets is serial-dependent: the same nominal series carries different boards across its production run, and ordering from a model number alone is how a homeowner ends up paying for two boards. The plate is read on site, before anything is ordered.
Lead times are worth asking about at the same visit. Boards for legacy series are not always on a shelf, and knowing that a part is a week out is information you should have before you decide between a repair and a replacement, not after the cabinet is already in pieces.
The repair-or-replace question after a storm
For a cabinet inside the manufacturer’s twelve-year limited sealed-system window, a storm-damaged board is a straightforward repair decision, because the expensive half of the appliance is still covered and the board is not the expensive half.
For a 600 or 700 Series cabinet from the 1996 to 2009 run, outside every warranty, the calculation is different and we will give you the honest version of it. A board, a fan motor and a defrost component on a thirty-year-old cabinet with sound doors, sound panels and a fitted opening is usually money well spent, because replacement means cabinetry work as well as an appliance. A board plus a failed compressor on the same cabinet usually is not, and we will say so plainly rather than quote around it.
