Sub-Zero freezer column repair

A freezer column holds 0°F on one sealed system with no fresh-food side to borrow air from, so frost, drain ice and defrost faults present differently here than they do in an over-under cabinet.

Independent service · Jacksonville, FL $80 flat diagnostic Reviewed

A tall stainless refrigerated cabinet standing open, wire shelves stacked with covered containers and the door gasket in shadow along the frame.
A column is a single tall compartment, so a fault at the top is felt at the bottom within hours.
How it presents
  • Freezer running above 0°F while the paired refrigerator column is fine
  • Heavy frost on the rear evaporator cover or on packaged food
  • Ice sheet forming across the floor of the lower basket
  • Ice maker stopped producing after the compartment drifted above 5°F
  • Compressor running almost continuously
  • Door not pulling itself shut on the last few degrees of travel
What gets checked, in order
  1. Read the compartment temperature against the 0°F setpoint before opening the door
  2. Confirm whether the column shares a control with a paired refrigerator column
  3. Remove the evaporator cover and inspect frost pattern across the full coil face
  4. Test defrost heater resistance and defrost termination
  5. Trace the drain tube and determine whether it is frozen or genuinely obstructed
  6. Check hinge closure and gasket compression along the full door perimeter

A freezer column is one cabinet doing one job. There is no fresh-food compartment above it and no second sealed system in the same box, so the diagnostic logic that applies to an over-under unit does not transfer cleanly. When a column drifts warm, the fault is on the only circuit it has.

Columns are usually installed as pairs, a refrigerator column beside a freezer column, sometimes with a third cabinet for wine. The two food columns are separate appliances with separate model plates and separate warranties. It is common for one to fail while the other runs perfectly for another five years, and it is worth reading both model plates before calling, because the repair is scoped to one of them.

Frost is a symptom, not a fault

A freezer is supposed to be dry. Frost that accumulates on packaged food, on the evaporator cover or across the ceiling of the compartment means moisture is entering faster than the defrost cycle can clear it, or the defrost cycle is not clearing it at all.

Three causes account for most of it. The first is a door that is not sealing: a gasket that has taken a set, a hinge that has dropped, or a panel that has been re-hung slightly out of plane after a cabinetry change. The second is a defrost failure, either an open heater or a termination device that ends the cycle early. The third is the drain. Once the drain freezes, meltwater backs up under the evaporator, refreezes, and the coil loses surface area every cycle until airflow stops.

The drain is frozen, not clogged

This is the single most misdiagnosed item on a column. The drain tube runs from the evaporator pan through the cabinet floor, and in almost every case the blockage is ice rather than debris. Sub-Zero’s own guidance is explicit on the point.

Do not push a wire down it and do not pour boiling water into it. There is a drain heater and an evaporator pan on the other side of that tube, and a puncture converts a two-hour repair into a sealed-system job. The correct approach is a controlled defrost with the door held open and the compartment allowed to come up to room temperature, then an inspection of the drain heater circuit to find out why it froze in the first place. A drain that freezes once will freeze again unless the cause is corrected.

Ice production has its own floor

If the column feeds an ice maker, the compartment temperature matters more than the ice maker does. Production requires the freezer at or below 5°F, and 0°F is the number to aim for. A column sitting at 8°F will keep the food frozen and will quietly stop making ice, and the resulting service call is usually booked as an ice maker fault. Read the compartment first.

Codes on legacy cabinets

On the 600 Series, the 648PRO, the 700 Series and the IC-27, an EC40 code reports excessive freezer compressor run time. The published split is useful. If the compartment is less than ten degrees above setpoint, a restricted condenser is the likely cause and cleaning it is the first step. If it is more than ten degrees above setpoint and no door has been left standing open, the unit needs a technician rather than a vacuum cleaner.

Leave the code on the display. A stored code with a timestamp tells us when the run-time excursion started, and that frequently distinguishes a slow refrigerant loss from an abrupt component failure.

Cost and coverage

The diagnostic is $80, flat, credited toward the repair, with a written estimate before anything is ordered. Parts are genuine OEM. We warrant 90 days on labor and 365 days on parts.

Column cabinets in this market are often between eight and fifteen years old, which puts many of them inside the manufacturer’s twelve-year limited sealed-system window. In years six through twelve the covered sealed-system part is still supplied, parts only, obtained from the manufacturer directly, with the homeowner paying labor. We will tell you when that applies rather than quote around it.

Price bands

What does freezer column work cost in Jacksonville?

Bands for the work this page describes. $80 flat diagnostic, credited toward the repair. Written estimate before any part is ordered or any work begins.

Bands that fit this page, parts and labor
Work Typical range
Diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair $80
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $260–$650
Compressor or sealed-system repair $900–$2,360
Evaporator or condenser fan motor $250–$600
Door gasket or seal replacement $250–$630

Parts and labor together, on this equipment, in this market. The band is where the work lands before it is measured; the figure itself is written down after the diagnostic and before anything is ordered. $80 of it is the diagnostic, credited toward the repair once you approve the work, and $2,360 is the top of the range on this page rather than a price anybody expects to pay. The whole book is here.

Customer feedback

Verdicts on freezer column work

4.5 out of 5 across 90 customer reviews. Read all of them.

The column was warm at the top and frozen solid at the bottom. He said airflow rather than refrigerant, and he was right. A fan motor and a cleared vent later it reads evenly from shelf to shelf.

Imogen B.2026-05-17

A sheet of ice across the bottom basket every fortnight. He traced it to a frozen drain, defrosted the cabinet properly, and then went looking for the reason it kept freezing instead of just clearing it.

Josefina R.2026-03-05

Frost kept returning across the packaged food however often we emptied the cabinet. He found the drain iced and the drain heater circuit open, defrosted it properly, and replaced the heater rather than clearing it again.

Questions we are asked

Why does frost keep returning after the compartment is cleared out?
Frost is moisture arriving faster than the defrost cycle removes it, so clearing it treats the symptom. The three causes worth separating are a seal that no longer compresses, a defrost circuit that opens or terminates early, and a drain that has iced and is backing meltwater onto the coil.
Can a frozen drain tube be cleared at home?
Not safely. The drain heater and the evaporator pan sit directly behind that tube, so a wire punctures a sealed system and boiling water reaches parts never meant to see it. A controlled defrost with the door held open clears the ice; the repair is finding out why it froze.
The column is running above 0°F. What is that going to cost?
The bands that fault leads to are all printed in the table on this page — the defrost circuit, an evaporator or condenser fan motor, and at the far end the sealed system itself. Which of them it is comes out of the measurement rather than the phone call, and the $80 diagnostic is credited toward whichever it turns out to be.
What is the cabinet telling me with an EC40 code?
Excessive freezer compressor run time on the 600 Series, the 648PRO, the 700 Series and the IC-27. The published split is useful. Under ten degrees above setpoint points at a restricted condenser; more than ten degrees above it, with no door left standing open, needs a technician.
