What a Sub-Zero repair costs here

$80 flat diagnostic, credited toward the repair. Written estimate before any part is ordered or any work begins. No trip charge on top, no surcharge for distance inside the published service area, and no after-hours rate because we do not work after hours.

An overhead view of a technician’s tools on a kitchen towel: a multimeter, nut drivers and two replacement parts still in their bags.
The meter in this frame is what the diagnostic fee buys. The bags are what comes after it.

The flat diagnostic

$80, flat, for any refrigeration cabinet inside the published service area. It buys a full diagnosis rather than a look: both compartments measured against both setpoints, the condenser located for that specific series and assessed, any stored service code recorded as found, and the failing sealed system identified before a component is condemned.

It is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. If you do not, you keep the written estimate and you owe nothing further.

Why a band rather than a price

Because a dual-refrigeration cabinet does not have one failure mode. A warm fresh-food compartment can be an evaporator fan, a defrost circuit, a thermistor, a restriction or a slow refrigerant loss on one of two circuits. Those are not close to each other in cost, so the table further down gives the band each kind of work falls in and the diagnostic gives the figure. A flat price list that pretends the difference away exists to get the door open.

A published parts price is worse than a band. Board fit on these cabinets is serial-dependent. Quoting a board number from a website and shipping the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake.

What is included in a repair

Labor, the part, the return visit if the part had to be ordered, and our own coverage: 90 days on labor and 365 days on parts. Genuine OEM parts. No aftermarket substitutions on sealed-system or control components.

Nothing is ordered and no work begins until the written estimate is approved. If a second fault surfaces during the repair, it is quoted separately before it is touched.

The one discount that is real

If your cabinet is between six and twelve years old, ask about the manufacturer's limited sealed-system coverage before you approve anything. In years 6 through 12 the sealed-system part is still covered, parts only. A homeowner may have that work done by an independent shop: the covered part is obtained from the manufacturer directly and the homeowner pays the labor. On a compressor or evaporator failure that changes the number substantially. The detail is here.

The whole book

What will the repair itself cost?

These are the bands this company quotes from, researched for this market and printed rather than kept in a drawer. A band is not an estimate; it is where the work lands before anybody measures your cabinet.

Every band we quote from, parts and labor
Work Typical range
Diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair $80
Door gasket or seal replacement $250–$630
Evaporator or condenser fan motor $250–$600
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $260–$650
Ice maker, water valve or supply line $230–$630
Electronic control board $440–$790
Compressor or sealed-system repair $900–$2,360

Parts and labor together, on this equipment, in this market. The band is where the work lands before it is measured; the figure itself is written down after the diagnostic and before anything is ordered. $80 of it is the diagnostic, credited toward the repair once you approve the work, and $2,360 is the top of the range on this page rather than a price anybody expects to pay. The whole book is here.

Repair or replace
What the replacement side of the decision costs
Instead of repairing Appliance cost
Typical 36-42 inch built-in, the usual repair-or-replace comparison $11,600–$16,800
Custom panels and integrated cabinetry, on top of the appliance $2,000–$5,000
Replacement wine storage or an undercounter unit, appliance only $3,500–$5,500

A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; replacing a column pair is usually two purchases rather than one. Appliance pricing is national, unlike the labour above. Read against the bands above, that is why a sealed-system repair on a cabinet still inside the manufacturer’s twelve-year limited window is usually the cheaper half of the decision. What that coverage does.

Customer feedback

What the invoice looked like from the other side

4.5 out of 5 across 90 customer reviews. Read all of them.

The unit outside kept tripping. He was honest that the cabinet is not rated for the ambient it lives in out there and told me exactly what would keep happening. Repaired anyway, and still going.

Elspeth R.2026-03-10

The column read zero on the display and the contents were soft. He caught that the sensor was reporting the setpoint rather than real air temperature and replaced it. Proper diagnosis rather than guesswork.

Roland J.2026-07-11

The unit was vibrating hard enough to rattle the bottles against each other. He found the compressor mounts collapsed on one side, replaced them, and levelled the cabinet in its alcove while he was there.

Pricing questions

What does the $80 diagnostic cover?
The visit, both compartment temperatures read against both setpoints, condenser assessment for that series, identification of which of the two sealed systems is affected, and a written estimate. If you approve the repair, the $80 is credited against it.
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. The estimate is produced from the diagnostic and handed over before anything is ordered. You are free to take it elsewhere.
Can you quote a repair over the phone?
Not honestly. A warm fresh-food compartment has at least five distinct causes on a dual-refrigeration cabinet and they differ by an order of magnitude in cost. We can tell you the likely range once we know the series and the measured temperatures.
Is there a second diagnostic fee if the part takes two visits?
No. One diagnostic per fault. If a part has to be ordered, the return visit to fit it is part of the quoted repair.
