Start with the instruction that matters most: if your cabinet is showing a code and a technician is coming, leave it showing.
A code is not just a label for a symptom. It carries timing. It tells us when the excursion began, how long it ran, and how the control responded. On a cabinet with two independent sealed systems that information frequently identifies which circuit failed before a single panel comes off. Cleared, it is gone, and we start from a thermometer reading and a customer’s recollection.
EC50 and the flashing SERVICE indicator
EC50 appears with a flashing SERVICE indicator on the current and recent built-in cabinets. It is the code most homeowners meet.
The intended sequence is straightforward. Clean the condenser. Wait for compartment temperatures to come back near normal. Then, and only then, clear the code by holding the door-ajar alarm key for fifteen seconds.
Two parts of that get skipped. People clear the code first and clean afterwards, which produces a cabinet that simply raises it again. And people clear it while the compartments are still warm, which tells the control that a fault it is actively observing has been dealt with.
If temperatures are not back at setpoint 24 hours after the cleaning, do not clear anything. Book the visit and leave the display alone.
EC40 and the ten-degree split
EC40 reports excessive freezer compressor run time. It appears on the 600 Series, the 648PRO, the 700 Series and the IC-27.
The published guidance contains the most useful troubleshooting rule in the legacy range, and it is a temperature split:
If the freezer compartment is less than ten degrees above setpoint, treat it as a restricted condenser. Clean it and re-check.
If the freezer compartment is more than ten degrees above setpoint, and no door has been left standing open, the cabinet needs a technician rather than a vacuum cleaner.
That single threshold separates a maintenance job from a component or sealed-system failure, and it does so before anybody spends money. It is worth checking the door first, honestly — a freezer drawer left ajar overnight generates exactly this code and no fault at all.
EE on the 600 Series
If a 600 Series cabinet displays EE, the manufacturer’s own published position is that there is no consumer troubleshooting for it.
We repeat that as stated rather than dressing it up. There is no sequence of button presses, no reset, and no condenser cleaning that addresses EE. It is a service code in the literal sense. Leave it showing and book the visit.
Why “do not clear it” is not an upsell
It would be easy to read this as a service company protecting its own diagnostic time. The opposite is closer to true: a cleared code frequently means a longer visit, or a second one, and neither of those is good for anybody.
The concrete case is a cabinet with two sealed systems and an intermittent fault on one of them. A stored code with timing tells us the excursion happened at 3am on three consecutive nights, which points hard at a defrost cycle. Without it we have a cabinet that is currently at setpoint, an owner who is certain something is wrong, and no evidence. That is how intermittent faults turn into repeat visits.
What to write down before you call
The code, exactly as displayed. Both compartment temperatures from an independent thermometer, left in place for two hours. Both setpoints. Whether a door has been left open recently. Whether the condenser has been cleaned, and when.
Five pieces of information, and the first one is free if nobody has pressed anything.
What we will not tell you
We do not publish control-board part numbers as definitive on any series. Board fit is serial-dependent and the wrong board is money spent twice. If a code points at a control, the serial comes off the plate at the visit and the part is identified from that.
