The BI cabinets were built from 2008 until 2022, when the series was renamed Classic and the prefix changed to CL. They are the single most common cabinet we are called to in St. Johns County and on the Jacksonville Southside, because they went into almost every kitchen built here between the recession and the pandemic.
Most of them are now between six and fifteen years old. That age band is where this page earns its keep.
Architecture
A BI is a full-depth built-in with two independent sealed systems: two compressors, two evaporators, one shared condenser assembly behind a flip-up grille at the top of the cabinet. The fresh-food circuit holds 38°F and is designed to stay humid. The freezer circuit holds 0°F and is designed to stay dry.
Anyone describing a BI as having a compressor has not worked on one. The distinction is not academic: it determines which coil gets opened, which fan gets tested, and what a warm refrigerator over a cold freezer actually means.
What fails at what age
Between years six and ten the common items are the fresh-food evaporator fan, defrost components on either circuit, door gaskets that have taken a set, and drains that freeze. None of those are expensive and all of them present as temperature complaints.
From year ten onward the sealed system enters the conversation. A slow refrigerant loss on one circuit produces a coil that frosts only partway across its face and a compartment that holds in winter and fails in August. That seasonal pattern is one of the more reliable tells we see, and in Northeast Florida the seasonal swing is large enough to make it obvious.
Control boards fail too, and this market gives them help. Around sixty-eight thunderstorm days a year put transients on residential circuits, and a cabinet on an unprotected branch takes them. We do not publish board part numbers as definitive, because board fit on this series is serial-dependent and the wrong board is an expensive mistake. The serial plate is read on site.
The condenser, and the two rules
Top-mounted, behind a grille you can lift by hand. Clean it every six to twelve months, every six with pets, and not at all on a unit under six months old — which by definition no BI is any more.
Rule one: if the fresh-food compartment is above 48°F against a 38°F setpoint, a cleaning is unlikely to bring it back. That is a failed component or a sealed-system fault.
Rule two: if temperatures have not returned to setpoint within 24 hours of a cleaning, book service. Waiting out a second week only adds a second week of spoiled food.
EC50
BI cabinets show EC50 with a flashing SERVICE indicator. Once a condenser cleaning is done and the compartments are near normal, the code clears by holding the door-ajar alarm key for fifteen seconds. If a technician is booked, leave the code showing. It is logged evidence and on a two-system cabinet it frequently identifies the failing circuit before a single panel comes off.
The coverage argument
Manufacturer terms on this generation are two years full parts and labor, five years full on the sealed system, and twelve years limited on the sealed system, parts only.
A BI built in 2016 is inside that twelve-year limited window today. If the failure is a covered sealed-system component, the part is still supplied, parts only, obtained from the manufacturer directly, and an independent shop may perform the work with the homeowner paying labor.
That is why a built-in cabinet of this class with a failed compressor is often worth repairing and why we ask for the serial and the install date on the first call. It is also why we tell you when a repair is not worth doing: a 2009 cabinet outside the window with a failed sealed system on one side is a genuinely different conversation, and we would rather have it before the diagnostic than after.
Water and ice
Twist-in filter 4204490 or 9030868. The cartridge is a maintenance item and the reason to change it on schedule is flow: a saturated filter restricts the supply and produces thin cubes that read as a failing ice maker. On a cabinet of this vintage the ice system is usually the first thing to need attention, and the fault divides three ways — short fill upstream of the mold, a harvest fault at the ejector or mold thermostat, or a diverted fill tube that freezes a slab across the back of the compartment.
