# Refrigerator drawer repair

Drawer units carry their whole seal on a moving part, so alignment, runner wear and gasket compression cause more warm-drawer calls than any refrigeration component does.

A drawer is a cabinet that moves, and the runners are half the calls on it.

How it presents
- One drawer holding temperature while the other runs warm
- Drawer front standing proud of the cabinetry on one side
- Drawer dragging, grinding or refusing to close the last inch
- Condensation or frost around the drawer opening
- Warm air felt at the top edge of the closed drawer
- Unit running constantly in an island with restricted airflow

What gets checked, in order
- Measure each drawer separately against its own setpoint
- Inspect runner travel through the full stroke for binding and lift
- Check gasket compression along all four sides of each drawer
- Confirm the panel weight and handle mounting have not pulled the front out of plane
- Inspect the bottom grille and condenser for restriction
- Verify the drain path is clear and unfrozen

Refrigerator drawers are the only refrigeration product where the entire door seal travels on a mechanism. A hinged door pivots on two fixed points and the gasket meets a flat face. A drawer carries its gasket out into the room and back on a pair of runners, with a heavy custom panel and a handle hanging off the front of it. Everything about the failure profile follows from that.

## One drawer warm, one drawer fine

This is the classic drawer complaint and it is rarely a refrigeration fault. Two drawers in the same cabinet usually share air from one evaporator. If one holds temperature and the other does not, the air is arriving and the difference is at the seal or in the drawer’s own sensing.

We measure both drawers independently, then look along the gasket with the drawer closed. A gasket that has taken a compression set on the top edge, common where a handle is used to pull the drawer shut off-centre for ten years, will let a steady stream of room air in at the top while the sides still look perfect. That produces a drawer that reads five to eight degrees warm and never recovers, and produces frost around the opening in humid weather, which Northeast Florida supplies for most of the year.

## Runners are consumables

Full-extension runners carrying a hardwood or stainless panel, a solid brass handle and forty pounds of contents wear. They do not usually fail outright. They develop lift at the end of travel, which tilts the drawer front a few degrees and lifts the top of the gasket off its face. The customer describes it as the drawer not closing properly. The refrigeration effect is a warm drawer.

Runner replacement, re-shimming and panel realignment are the most common work on this product. It is unglamorous and it fixes more drawers than any electrical part.

## Alignment after cabinetry work

We see a spike in drawer calls after kitchen refreshes. New panel stock is heavier than the original, or a handle is moved further from the centreline, or a filler strip is added and the unit is pushed a quarter inch out of square in its opening. All three shift the seal. If your drawers began behaving differently within a few weeks of a remodel, tell us on the phone; it changes what we bring.

## Airflow in an island

Drawer units are frequently specified for islands, which is where their low profile earns its keep and where their airflow suffers most. The condenser is at the bottom behind a front grille. If a stone overhang, a decorative panel or a run of trim has narrowed that opening, the unit runs longer, holds less well in August, and recovers in November. Cleaning schedule is six to twelve months, halved with pets, not needed on a unit under six months old.

## Drains and frost

Drawer cabinets have a drain and it can freeze. As everywhere else in this product family, the blockage is ice far more often than debris. Nothing rigid goes down that tube and boiling water does not go into it, because the drain heater and evaporator pan sit on the other side. A controlled defrost with the drawers open clears the ice; finding out why it froze is the actual repair.

## What it costs

$80 flat diagnostic, credited toward the repair. Written estimate before any part is ordered. Genuine OEM parts. 90 days on labor, 365 days on parts.

Drawer units in this market are commonly integrated into kitchens built in the last fifteen years across St. Johns County, the Southside and Nocatee. Where the cabinet is between six and twelve years old and the fault does turn out to be in the sealed system, the manufacturer’s limited coverage supplies the covered part, parts only, and an independent shop may fit it with the homeowner paying labor. We will say so on the estimate rather than around it.

Parts commonly replaced
- Drawer gasket
- Runner and slide assembly
- Evaporator fan motor
- Condenser fan motor
- Drawer thermistor

## Verdicts on refrigerator drawers work

★★★★★

Both drawers had stopped holding and the display was flashing. It was the evaporator fan under the base, blocked by a fallen bag of peas that had been down there long enough to freeze into the housing.

Duncan L.2026-06-02

★★★★☆

The drawer unit was sweating inside. He traced it to a seal that had hardened and a drain that was not clearing. Both were sorted in one visit, though the replacement seal took a while to arrive.

Otto J.2025-09-08

★★★★★

The lower drawer would not close the last inch. He stripped the runner, found a bent slide from something being forced shut, and replaced the pair so that the unit tracks straight again.
