Decision

# Worth fixing, or worth replacing?

The most repeated question on the phone, and the one a price list refuses to answer. Two tables decide it: what the repair costs, and what the cabinet standing in the opening would cost to replace. Both are printed below, and the second one is the half most people never price.

![The lower half of an open built-in refrigeration column with its base grille exposed, a kneeling technician’s leg beside it and hand tools laid out on a mat on the tiled floor.](https://firstcoastsubzero.com/img/subzero-repair-11.webp)

The decision is made down here, with the grille off and both compartments read, not from a showroom price.

Diagnostic $80

Dearest repair $2,360

Half a built-in $5,800–$8,400

Panels on top $2,000–$5,000

## The rule, and what it was written for

The rule of thumb people arrive with is the fifty per cent one: if the repair costs more than
half of a replacement, replace. It is a reasonable rule and it comes from domestic appliances,
where a repair and a new machine are genuinely the same order of magnitude — a few hundred
dollars against a few hundred more.

Built-in refrigeration breaks the rule's assumption. The cabinet in your opening is not a
freestanding appliance that can be wheeled out and swapped; it is joinery with a sealed system
in it. So the rule still applies, it simply lands somewhere else, and the honest way to show
that is to do the division rather than assert the answer.

## The division, on the two tables this site publishes

The repair side is the band table further down: researched for this market, parts and labor
together, printed rather than kept in a drawer. The dearest work in it — compressor or sealed-system repair —
runs to $2,360 at the top. The second dearest, electronic control board,
tops out at $790.

The replacement side is what a comparable cabinet costs before anybody fits it:
$11,600–$16,800 for the usual thirty-six to forty-two
inch built-in. Half of that is $5,800–$8,400,
and the entire repair book sits under the bottom of that line. That is the whole answer for a
full-size cabinet, and it is why we say so plainly rather than hedging.

The replacement figure is also the polite version. Custom panels and integrated cabinetry add
$2,000–$5,000 on top, and nothing on the repair side has
an equivalent. A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; replacing a column pair is usually two purchases rather than one. Appliance pricing is national, unlike the labour above.

## Where it is genuinely a judgement call

Undercounter units and wine cabinets. A replacement there is
$3,500–$5,500, so the fifty per cent line falls at
$1,750–$2,750 — and a sealed-system
repair, at $900–$2,360, can land on either side of it. On a small cabinet the question
stops being arithmetic and becomes a question about the rest of the machine: how the door and
hinges have worn, whether the grille was ever unobstructed, what the condenser looks like.

That is a judgement we would rather make with the panel off than over the phone, which is what
the $80 diagnostic is for. You get the written estimate either way, and you
are free to take it to a showroom.

## When replacing really is the right answer

There are four of them here, and none is about age. The opening will not take a current cabinet
without carpentry, which turns a repair decision into a kitchen decision. The condenser fin
stock has corroded in the coastal air past the point where cleaning restores it — aluminium
that has gone is gone. Both sealed systems have failed, rather than one of the two. Or the
kitchen is being rebuilt anyway, so the panel and cabinetry cost is already committed and the
comparison is no longer the one above.

Everything else on a built-in is a repair, and a technician who reaches for replacement before
measuring both compartments has not done the diagnosis.

## Before you approve anything, check the coverage

If the cabinet is between six and twelve years old, the manufacturer's limited sealed-system
coverage is still live and it is parts only.
In years 6 through 12 the sealed-system part is still covered, parts only. A homeowner may have that work done by an independent shop: the covered part is obtained from the manufacturer directly and the homeowner pays the labor. On the one repair that tops this book, that
changes the number substantially, and it is the first thing we look for on a sealed-system
fault. [What the coverage actually says](https://firstcoastsubzero.com/warranty/).

The fifty per cent line, both ways
Replacement, halved, against the top of the repair book

| Replacing instead| Half of it
| Typical 36-42 inch built-in, the usual repair-or-replace comparison Every band in the book stays below the line.| $5,800–$8,400
| Replacement wine storage or an undercounter unit, appliance only The sealed-system band can cross the line. Judgement call.| $1,750–$2,750
| Top of the repair book, for comparison| $2,360

Not a factor
Age on its own. A cabinet that holds both setpoints after one circuit is repaired is not
near the end of anything, whatever the year on the plate says.

A parts quote read off a website. Board fit on these cabinets is serial-dependent, and a
wrong board bought to avoid a diagnostic is the most expensive saving available.

Repair against replace

## Both sides of the decision, printed

The repair book first, then what the replacement side of the same decision costs. Neither table is an estimate: the band is where work lands before anybody measures your cabinet, and the appliance figures are what a comparable unit sells for before it is fitted.

Every band we quote from, parts and labor
| Work| Typical range
| Diagnostic visit, credited toward the repair| $80
| Door gasket or seal replacement| $250–$630
| Evaporator or condenser fan motor| $250–$600
| Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor| $260–$650
| Ice maker, water valve or supply line| $230–$630
| Electronic control board| $440–$790
| Compressor or sealed-system repair| $900–$2,360

Parts and labor together, on this equipment, in this market. The band is where the work lands
before it is measured; the figure itself is written down after the diagnostic and before anything
is ordered. $80 of it is the diagnostic, credited toward the repair once you
approve the work, and $2,360 is the top of the range on this page rather than a price
anybody expects to pay. [The whole book is here](https://firstcoastsubzero.com/pricing/).

Repair or replace
What the replacement side of the decision costs

| Instead of repairing| Appliance cost
| Typical 36-42 inch built-in, the usual repair-or-replace comparison| $11,600–$16,800
| Custom panels and integrated cabinetry, on top of the appliance| $2,000–$5,000
| Replacement wine storage or an undercounter unit, appliance only| $3,500–$5,500

A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; replacing a column pair is usually two purchases rather than one. Appliance pricing is national, unlike the labour above. Read against the bands above, that is why a sealed-system repair on a
cabinet still inside the manufacturer’s twelve-year limited window is usually the cheaper
half of the decision. [What that coverage does](https://firstcoastsubzero.com/warranty/).

Customer feedback

## Cabinets that were repaired rather than replaced

★★★★★

Old house, tight alcove, and the cabinet had been running hot since spring. He measured the discharge line, cleaned a condenser packed with lint, then came back a week later to confirm it was cycling off properly.

Corinne S.2026-02-11

★★★★★

A twenty-year-old built-in that everybody else wanted to replace. He read the plate, sourced the correct evaporator fan for that serial run, and the cabinet has held thirty-eight degrees ever since.

Adele F.2026-06-30

★★★★★

Interior lights stayed on with the door closed and the compartment warmed slowly all week. It was a failed door switch, not the board another shop had already quoted for. Half an hour and it was done.

## The questions people actually type

- Is it worth fixing a Sub-Zero refrigerator?: Usually yes, and the arithmetic is not close. The dearest work in our book is a sealed-system repair, and it tops out below half the cost of the cheapest comparable built-in replacement, before panels, delivery and cabinetry are counted on the replacement side. The judgement only tightens on a small undercounter or wine cabinet.
- What is the 50% rule for appliance repair?: A rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half of a replacement, replace. It was written for domestic appliances, where a repair and a new machine are the same order of magnitude. On built-in refrigeration they are not, so the rule almost always lands on repair here.
- Is it worth repairing a 20 year old Sub-Zero refrigerator?: Age alone does not decide it. What decides it is whether the cabinet holds both setpoints once the fault is fixed, whether the condenser fin stock has corroded past cleaning, and whether the opening would take a current cabinet at all. A twenty-year-old cabinet with one failed circuit is a repair.
- Is it worth replacing the compressor on my refrigerator?: On a full-size cabinet there are two compressors and only one has failed, which is half the machine rather than all of it. Sealed-system work is the top band in the table above and still sits under half a replacement. Check the manufacturer limited coverage first: in years six to twelve it pays for the part.
- What is the most expensive part to replace on a refrigerator?: The sealed system: compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier and the tubing joining them. It is the top band in the table on this page, and the only work that requires the circuit to be opened, evacuated and recharged by an EPA Section 608 certified technician. The electronic control board is the next one down.
- How much does it cost to replace a Sub-Zero compressor?: It falls in the sealed-system band printed on this page, which covers parts and labor together and is the widest band in the book, because a compressor swap on one circuit and a full recharge with a restriction to clear are not the same job. The firm figure is written after the diagnostic.
- How much do appliance repair technicians charge per hour?: We do not bill by the hour, and an hourly meter gives nobody a reason to work quickly. What you pay here is a flat diagnostic, credited toward the repair, and then a written figure for the job itself, agreed before anything is ordered. Two visits for one fault carry one diagnostic.
- What is the average lifespan of a Sub-Zero refrigerator?: The trade generally sees these cabinets outlast domestic refrigerators by a wide margin, which is what the manufacturer twelve-year limited sealed-system coverage implies about the design. We publish no average of our own: we have not measured one, and a number invented for a web page is worth nothing to you.
